20 Amazing Facts About The UK

Today I did a little digging and found a few interesting facts about the UK.  There's plenty I didn't know about myself and some of them are definitely fascinating.  I thought I would share them with you too.


1.  London has been called Londonium, Ludenwic, and Ludenburg in the past.

2.  In the Medieval Times, animals could be put on trial for crimes (and be sentenced to death!)

3.  The British eat over 11.5 billion (1,500,000,000) sandwiches every year! (can you believe it!)

4.  William the Conqueror ordered everyone to be in their beds by 8 pm.

5.  There are over 30,000 people with the name John Smith in England (that's crazy!)

6.  The Beatles originally called themselves the Blackjacks, and then the Quarrymen (glad they changed their name).

7.  Big Ben is not actually the name of the clock, it is the name of the bell which is inside the clock.

8.  There are more chickens than people in England.

9.  The picture of the Queen on £1 coins show her age at the time they were made.

10. French was the official language of England for about 300 years, from 1066 till 1362.

11. The United Kingdom recently named chicken tikka masala as its national dish, which is a spicy curry created in Britain and is unheard of in India itself.

12. More languages (300) are spoken in London than in any other country in the world.

13. Britain is the only country in the world which doesn’t have its name on its postage stamps.

14. Completed in 2012, London’s The Shard, at 1,107 feet (350 m), is Europe’s tallest building.

15. In 1945, a flock of birds landed on the minute hand of Big Ben and put the time back by 5 minutes.

16. The first telephone directory published in England contained 25 names.

17. Gargoyles were originally used as drain pipes!

18. Every day, the British drink 165 million cups of tea, which is over 20 times more than the average American.

19. About 30% of today’s Londoners were born outside the United Kingdom.

20. Probably built around 3000 B.C., Stonehenge has stood on England’s Salisbury Plain for more than 5,000 years and is older than the famous Great Pyramids of Egypt.
